Welcome & Opening Remarks – 8:00 – 8:15

Opening Session- 8:15 a.m.- 9:15 a.m.- All participants will attend this session
Dr. Irma Gibson – “A ‘Wake Up’ Call for Child and Family Advocates, the Educational System and Other Community Partners: Bridging the Gap 21st Century Style!”
- Indentify characteristics to enhance partnerships among community based and child welfare based organizations
- Be knowledgeable about effective community based interventions for addressing child welfare issues
- Learn about the educational deficits of at risk youth in the 21st Century

Session I (choice of one) 9:15a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
Lewis Whitfield – “The Sum of all Parts = Teenage Dropout + the Economy”
- Participants will list overall drop out issues locally and nationally
- At the end of this session participants will learn warning signs and prevention strategies for dropouts using current research efforts
- Identify available resources for teenage dropouts

Vickie Reece – “Emergency Preparedness and Community Resiliency”
- Participants will be able to explain protocols for their local jurisdictions
- Participants will learn to differentiate between local emergency preparedness planning partners and emergency support function and list 8 roles and responsibilities
- Participants will be able to develop a personal and family preparedness emergency plan and assist in community emergency preparedness planning

John Reynolds – “Ethical Issues in 21st Century Social Work Practice”
- Participants will review elements of the NASW Code of Ethics & examine the purposes of
ethical standards
- Participants will examine and consider numerous ways in which everyday situations have
ethical conflicts
- Participants will be educated on the ethical use of technology

Break 10:15 a.m.- 10:30a.m.

Session II (choice of one) 10:30- 11:30
Judge Ricky Thompson & Shirley Moon “Drug Courts – Changing the Trend in Criminal Justice
- At the end of the session participants will learn the underlying goals, composition and process of drug court
- Participants will understand how drug courts address the issues of substance abuse and the impact drug courts have on families and the community

Dr. Irma Gibson – “The Art and Science of Empowering Difficult Children and Adolescents: Are You Helping or Hindering?”
- List factors that cause behavioral problems in children
- Use self-reflection as the most important step to work with youth who are at risk
- Identify evidence based data that supports the importance of engaging in serious self-assessment in regards to the success of therapeutic interventions

Melora Jackson – “An Overview of Alzheimer’s Disease & Dementia”
- Participants will be able to identify early, middle and late stages of Alzheimer’s disease
- Participants will be educated on physical changes in the brain and the differences in dementias using demographics and statistics
- Participants will list 4 or more active methods of treatment

Lunch – On Your Own 11:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Session III (choice of one) 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Keona Harris – “African Americans and Mental Health”
- Participants will be educated on the stigma associated with mental health in the
African American Community
- Participants will be able to list 3 characteristics of mental health disorders at the end of
this session

Chris Brown – “Current Drug Trends”
- Participants will be able to list current drug trends and items to look for during home visits
- Participants will list tools needed to assess living environment of drug involved complaints
- At the end of this session, participants will list local and national resources

Valerie Fields – “Taking Care of Self While Taking Care of Others”
- Participants be educated on indentifying components of job stress
- At the end of this session, participants will differentiate between job stress and job burnout
- Participants will develop a self-care plan and list components of self-care

Break – 2:00 p.m.-2:15 p.m.

Session IV (choice of one) 2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.

Amanda Hamner – “Surviving the Behaviors of Foster/Adopted Children”
- Participants will learn to identify several survival behaviors of foster and adopted children
- Participants will be able to list causes associated with survival behaviors of foster and adopted
children which will include warning signs and triggers
- At the end of this session participants will be able to list ideas for surviving the behaviors of foster and
adopted children

Closing Session- 3:15- 4:15

John Reynolds – “Embracing and Appreciating Diversity in 21st Century Social Work Practice”
- Participants will review elements of the NASW Code of Ethics related to diversity and explore
explore multiple factors of diversity in their practice
- At the end of this session participants will know ways to engage clients in discussions about
factors of diversity
- At the end of this session participants will learn at least 3 methods of utilizing factors of diversity to enrich the clinical relationship and work toward client goals
